Programme Notes

Hereford, 22 March 2003

Good afternoon and welcome to the BFCSA page.

STEVE PERCY RESIGNS

The news came in too late for inclusion in the Southport programme, but you are probably aware that after twenty-five years on the committee, fifteen of them as Chairman, Steve Percy has decided to call it a day.

At the end of this season Steve will be stepping down as Chairman of the Supporters' Association.

He will also be resigning from the committee. He is looking forward to enjoying the football without the responsibilities that comes with the position. It is a thankless task and one that Steve has carried out with tireless dedication all these years.

However, he is not going away altogether. He is still planning on running the coaches to away games, and, of course, will be at any pitch, anywhere, any time, whenever there is a team called Barnet FC playing!

The committee would like to thank Steve and Ann (who has also resigned) for all the hard work they have done over the years and look forward to seeing (and hearing!) you at Underhill and every ground around the country the 'Mighty Bees' play at.

A new Chairman will be in place for the start of next season and this also leaves a few spare positions on the committee. If you fancy filling one of the vacancies why not ask one of the committee members around the ground what's involved.

Another reminder, it's not too late to join the Supporters Association for this season and you will have to be a member if you want to attend the AGM in the summer. More details about that in a later programme.

QUIZ TEAM

Unfortunately the team lost in the Home Counties Football Quiz League Cup a couple of Sundays ago.

The score was 45-68 to the brilliant AFC Wimbledon.

Team: John Erroll, Alex Jones, Steve Percy, David Bown, Peter Croft, and Paul Reisman.

Barnet Man of the match: Peter Croft.

Today I'd like to introduce the latest recruit to the committee. Chris showed an interest in becoming a member and before he could say 'No' we'd voted him on!! (Only joking).

I have been following Barnet since the late-Fry era and quickly became hooked on the all-action entertainment. I was lucky enough to see his side in full swing and to witness some fabulous football, which culminated in the double promotions of 1991 and 1993.

My favoured position at Underhill was on the barrier, behind the goal at the top end. Always up with the latest fashions, I used to wear a black and amber flatcap from the clubshop. During one game, Barnet were attacking down the slope when they were awarded a penalty. I punched the air with delight, and in doing so my cap went flying off my head and onto the pitch! Thankfully, a bemused Andy Pape returned it to me.

Since the Fry days, the club has had its ups and downs. The backdrop of the past eight years has always been the stadium saga. Recently, I have become involved with the work of the KBA. The past few months have been very busy with the development, and subsequent collapse, of a provisional agreement to allow the club to expand Underhill, once again leaving the club with an uncertain future. We have recently started a newsletter which, as well as hopefully keeping all informed, has given me the added bonus of being able to meet many of the Underhill regulars.

While the focus of the campaign has been to highlight the apathy of our council, I believe that many of the problems in football stem from a gross mismanagement of the game. The 6,000 rule, one of the key failings of Underhill, is one which is forcing many clubs to make improvements which they do not need and can not afford, simply to satisfy the arbitrary whims of the bureaucrats. We can only hope that sense will prevail, and that the talks of relaxing the regulations come to fruition.

As a Barnet supporter, the one thing to expect is the unexpected. At the Doncaster game earlier on in the season, a drum appeared on the east terrace. However with no sticks and a collective timidity overcoming my fellows, I ended up as the drummer. Things have improved since then. James has taken over the drumming, and with the Watermelon man on the trumpet, the band has become rather good.

I am the newest member on the committee, having joined just last month. As there were (and still are) a few spaces, I was invited to get involved and things went from there. It's been good being part of the KBA, the band and the SA. None are closed shops, so involvement is always welcome.
