Conference Press Release
23
May 2002
BARNET
Peter Shreeves reckons that being able to name a fit
again Ben Strevens next season will be like signing a new
player. The young striker, who scored 12 goals last
season, made only two brief first team appearances for
Shreeves in the final games of the season. "It will
be like signing a new striker on a free transfer and
every manager likes to do that", said Shreeves
before he left for a week's break in Cyprus.
Craig Pope is the fourth graduate of the Barnet
scholarship scheme to be rewarded with a new professional
contract. The 19-year-old defender is expected to
challenge for a regular first team place next season.
BURTON ALBION
Nigel Clough has added to his Burton Albion team with
another striker, this time, in the form of Glen Kirkwood
from Ilkeston Town. Kirkwood joined the Brewers on a free
transfer; he was Ilkeston's top scorer last season and
also voted their Player of the Year.
CHESTER CITY
Chester have beaten off the challenge from several clubs
to complete the signing of 25-year-old Michael Twiss from
Leigh RMI. Twiss scored 15 goals in the Conference for
Leigh RMI last season. The club have also signed
29-year-old Jimmy Kelly from Doncaster Rovers and the
vastly experienced 34-year-old player Michael Brown
released by newly promoted Boston United this week
DONCASTER ROVERS
Dave Glover, owner of Ledger Mobility visited Belle Vue
as the company were unveiled as the new Rovers Kit
sponsors after being drawn out of the Cup on Saturday by
Dave Penney at the Sponsorship Gala. Meanwhile, Peter
White, the Rovers groundsman has been nominated by other
Conference Clubs for the prestigious FA Groundsman of the
Year award for the Nationwide Conference.
FOREST GREEN ROVERS
The club have made an announcement: "Following a
review of the Forest Green Rovers playing staff budget
for the forthcoming season (2002/2003), it is with regret
that the clubs recent offer to Club Captain Mark Cooper
has been retracted."
HALIFAX TOWN
Neil Redfearn is seeking work elsewhere and has been
linked with a move to either Carlisle or Rochdale.
Redfearn was left with no choice but to look elsewhere
after over a month of talks with Halifax Town AFC and
O'Hara & Co. Administrators fell through. Bob
Walker tendered his resignation as Chairman and Director
of Halifax Town Football Club and this has been accepted.
LEIGH RMI
The Railwaymen might have lost Michael Twiss but Manager
Steve Waywell remains his optimistic self saying "I
am disappointed about Mark leaving because I know what he
is capable of, but it isn't the end of the world. He was
on the treatment table quite regularly and towards the
end of the season we didn't know when he was going to be
fit. But having said that, you can't take away what he
has done for us this season, and I can't blame him for
leaving because he has been made a tremendous
offer."
MARGATE
Margate Football Club have confirmed that their ground
share arrangement with Dover Athletic will go ahead next
season if planning permission is granted to develop their
Hartsdown Park ground.
MORECAMBE
Good news for Morecambe fans this week when Dave
McKearney signed a new one-year contract. McKearney, who
celebreated his testimonial year last season, put pen to
paper last week much to the delight of Shrimps boss Jim
Harvey. Whilst McKearney has signed, the Shrimps have
said goodbye to another long serving member of their
squad with the news that John Norman has been released
after making 273 appearances for the club and scoring 107
goals.
NORTHWICH VICTORIA
Councillors have blown the whistle on plans to build more
than 100 homes at the Drill Field. Northwich Victoria's
home of 128 years received a stay of execution and the
decision could have major repercussions for the club's
plans for a new stadium on Wincham Industrial Estate.
SCARBOROUGH
Scarborough have rejected a "derisory offer"
from Northampton Town for striker Darryn Stamp. The
Seasiders have previously reported the Cobblers to the FA
for an alleged illegal approach for Stamp. Northampton
have now made a formal bid club but have got nowhere near
Scarborough's valuation of the 23-year-old. "We have
had better offers and found this one derisory. The ball
is back in their court," confirmed Scarborough boss
Russell Slade.
SOUTHPORT
Southport's new website southportfcmanager.co.uk features
information straight from the horses mouth... Manager
Phil Wilson talks about the goings on at Southport,
specifically regarding Simon Parke, Lee Elam, Neil
Grayson and Steve Pickford.

STEVENAGE BOROUGH
Stevenage Borough confirmed the signings of two new
goalkeepers, Mark Westhead and Philip Wilson. Westhead,
26, was formerly at Wycombe and Bolton and joined Leigh
RMI last season. The following players have also
been re-signed having been out of contract at the end of
last season: Stuart Fraser, Richard Howell, Scotty
Houghton, Adrian Clarke, Jack Midson
TELFORD UNITED
Veteran keeper Paul Edwards has become the first major
player to agree to stay at Telford United. On the other
end of the scale boss Jake King has revealed that he does
not expect striker Jake Edwards to play for the Bucks
again. Edwards is the fifth confirmed departure from the
Bucks Head following the end of season exits by Mark
Quayle, Jim Bentley, Neil Moore, and Mark Albrighton.
WOKING
Roscoe D'sane has left Woking on a free transfer for
Aldershot.
YEOVIL TOWN
Yeovil boss Gary Johnson has denied newspaper and
internet reports linking him with the vacant manager's
job at 1st Division Brighton and Hove Albion, following
his successful first season at Huish Park. Speaking to
the Western Daily Press, Johnson said: "It's all
speculation. I want to make clear that I will be at
Yeovil next season, but speculation is always
flattering."
