Shreeves quits as Barnet boss

Article from Nationwide Weekend Preview, 22/03/03

Barnet manager Peter Shreeves has resigned after just over a year with the club and coach Martin Allen has taken over until the end of the season.

In a telephone call to Dennis Signy, the club's PR consultant, former Spurs and Sheffield Wednesday boss Shreeves said:

"All I will say is that I was unhappy that I wasn't able to give the Barnet public the success they deserved."

Signy said:

"It is not Peter's style to say more than he has or make recriminations. He has had a rapport with the players and the supporters and basically I think he has enjoyed working at Barnet."

With the position due to be reviewed at the end of the season, former Reading assistant manager Allen described his elevation as "a big step". He said:

"It wasn't easy to take the news that Peter had departed. He rang me to tell me he was resigning and there was no way I could change his mind.

"He told me he'd always be on the end of the phone to provide advice and ideas.

"For me to become manager is a big step, there's no doubt about that. I'm now responsible for results, team selection and transfers, but it's a job I would love to do on a permanent basis.

"We've done well in the time we've been here and we've stabilised the club. I do see a rosy future. At the moment we're in a transitional phase but we have some good young players and a nucleus of older players."

Of the 52 games Shreeves took charge of, they won 20, lost 18 and drew 14. Meanwhile, the Bees have announced they have completed the capture of defender Guy Butters on a one-month loan from Brighton. The 33-year-old has enjoyed spells with Spurs, Southend, Portsmouth and Gillingham.
