Programme Notes Stalybridge Celtic, 08 November 2003 Good afternoon and welcome to the BFCSA page. WELCOME STALYBRIDGE A warm welcome to today's visitors Stalybridge Celtic in the 1st round proper of the FA Cup. I hope you had a good journey down and enjoy your visit to Underhill. Any Barnet fan that made the trip to Bracknell in the last round would have been impressed with the friendly welcome we received there. Firstly I was surprised by the free car parking they had laid on in the college car park, then a large 'Welcome Barnet' banner greeted us as we approached the turnstiles. The operator was a friendly chap who directed us into the bar where a large contingent of Bees fans had amassed. On the whole it was a great day out, especially the result, and I think it shows that the smaller the club the more effort they put in. Whilst on the subject of turnstile operators I read a letter in the Non-League paper from Peter Pearsall, who is a gateman at Tamworth. In it he stated that he had met various types of fans, some better than others. He goes on to say: 'But last Saturday was a joy to be involved as the 250-plus travelling fans from Barnet were polite, courteous, knowledgeable and the friendliest so far.' In fact that wasn't the only praise our fans had that day. After the supporters club coach had stopped off at Rugby United FC to watch the England match, one Rugby fan was so impressed by the atmosphere created that he posted a message on the Barnet website message board congratulating us and saying he'd be down to Underhill with his family one day. MARTIN ALLEN But it's not just the fans that have been praised in the Non-League paper. Bracknell Town player Stuart Hammonds writes a column and this week he comments on how Martin Allen went to the Bracknell dressing room straight after the match telling them they had every reason to be proud of themselves and to make sure they do themselves justice in the league. All in all I personally think everyone connected with Barnet FC at the moment is doing a fantastic job and it certainly is a pleasure to be involved with this great club. Come on you Bees. GEORGE HALL It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of George Hall, a long-term supporter of Barnet FC. He was 77 and his recent cremation was attended by several of his fellow supporters. Born in Yorkshire he had been a fan of Huddersfield Town but when he moved to Mill Hill, he began to follow the Bees. Having joined the Royal Engineers at the age of 18, he claimed to have captured Hamburg single-handed with his tank in 1945. He was married and he and his wife had just celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. We send his widow, sons and grand children our condolences. He regularly stood behind the goal on the North Terrace and was well known for his warm smile and friendly word. We will sadly miss him. |
