| "I get the feeling this
isn't going to be a very interesting evening" Me, 7:30pm, 14th October, Barnet v. Brentford "Bloody hell, what a
night!" Strange that beforehand we were regarding the LDV Vans Trophy as a game we didn't really care about yet it proved to be one of the most entertaining evenings at Underhill in recent times. Guy Lopez's 25 yard opener, Liam Hatch's inspired comeback from injury, the effort put in by every Barnet player and the Brentford fan who seemed to have a problem with us and stared at us throughout. The lows of throwing away a two goal lead, the bedlam that ensued on the East Terrace after Liam Hatch's equaliser. Only at Barnet......... The fact that we lost wasn't in itself disappointing. What we had seen was a second string Barnet side show some real fight and grit, certainly more than what we saw on Saturday at Tamworth. Now our attentions turn to Leigh RMI. You could call them the Conference's equivalent to Carlisle United, they always seem to be near the bottom yet pull themselves out when it matters. They come into the game with two draws and six defeats in their last eight and that has left them in a precarious 20th place with just ten points. In thirteen games (one at home to Shrewsbury was called off) they have only managed to scrape 10 goals together and have conceded a relatively small 22. It started very well for Leigh, they defeated hotly tipped Dagenham & Redbridge 2-1 at Hilton Park but in the next twelve games they have picked up one win - 1-0 away at Northwich. Even with two defeats in a row, Barnet still lie in 4th place and are quite a way inside the Playoff five. The performance on Tuesday night against Brentford will go a long way towards restoring confidence in the fans and players. Danny Maddix and Lewis Hogg are missing due to suspension, Maddix has picked up five yellow cards and Lewis Hogg was sent off against Exeter. Liam Hatch surely deserves to get some sort of look in after a fantastic performance against Brentford having been out for nearly four months. Nothing else left to say
apart from COME ON BARNET! |

| Leigh RMI, the worst supported
team in the Conference but the passion amongst the 30
other "Leythers" I stood with at Stevenage last
season could match that of any side. The fact that their
support is way below what you'd expect from the
Conference seems to be quite a large talking point and
they always seem to be the butt of the jokes. Surely
people should realise that the seven people who travelled
to Underhill to follow their team have as much passion as
the rest, so why have a go at them? If the Conference has such a thing as a survival club, Leigh are that team, two consecutive close shaves and they already look like they could be in there again come the end of this season. No matter how precarious it has looked, Leigh have managed to pull it right out of the bag at the last minute and keep their Conference status. Leigh as a place may be dull but for some reason there is something about Hilton Park which is really enjoyable, god knows what it is but it's always a fixture we look forward to, the two games there have been entertaining (well last season's game wasn't) producing twelve goals. The 2001/2002 game saw Barnet go 3-1 down and pull it back to 3-3 in astonishing circumstances, we should have had a last minute penalty too. Their position should
not lull us into a false sense of security, we need to be
on our game because as the Tamworth and Exeter games have
shown, we will lose. |
