Super second half show gives bees deserved victory

By Andrew Taylor

A warm sunny afternoon greeted the supporters at Underhill for the final home game of the season, Stockport had sold over 1000 tickets plus for their visit which was vital for them to keep up their chase for automatic promotion, the Bees had little but final positioning to play for.

Barnet were forced into two changes Sagi Burton and Neal Bishop joined the ever-growing injury list, they were replaced by Nicky Nicolau and fit again Max Porter. Nicolau slotted in at left back with Gillet at centre back.

A quiet opening few minutes was brought to life with Albert Adomah putting in two dangerous crosses from the right, both of which were cleared by the County defence. Then the first decent chance fell to the visitors on ten minutes, a mix up in the bees defence allowed Ryan Lowe a shot from six yards, which he could only hit the post with, it was a big let off for Barnet.

Barnet continued to play some nice stuff but were rarely threatening the County goal, most of the play was going down the flanks with Jason Puncheon delivering some dangerous crosses from the left, and it was Puncheon who skied the next opportunity over the bar after shooting from around 20 yards.

On 20 minutes came another glaring opportunity for the visitors, Stephen Gleeson found space in the penalty area and had an open goal to aim at but there was Josh Wright to block and clear for the Bees. Nicky Nicolau then fired wide from 25 yards and moments later Ashley Carew was booked for a tackle from behind. Half time came, it was an evenly matched half but County were no doubt rueing two golden opportunities to take the lead.

Half Time: Barnet 0-0 Stockport County

The second half started brightly for Barnet and they were rewarded when given a free kick just outside the penalty area. Puncheon stepped up but the wall blocked his first attempt, Puncheon followed up with a crisp right-footed shot that flew past John Ruddy in the county goal giving him no chance. However the lead was to be short lived, there was confusion in the Bees defence who failed to deal with a long ball and Tommy Rowe nipped in past Michael Leary and lobbed keeper Lee Harrison from outside the area.

Barnet made two changes soon after, the injured Ashley Carew was replaced by Jordan Parkes and minutes later youngster Danny Hart coming on for Albert Adomah. Adam Birchall had a good chance after some good skill but his shot was well saved by Ruddy. Then followed a quiet period in the game before the winner came, Danny Hart put a great cross in from the right hand side and Cliff Akurang couldn't miss from six yards to head home, Hart charged over to join the celebrations it truly was a fantastic cross which was fully appreciated by his team mates.

With just minutes remaining the moment many Barnet supporters had come for, Giuliano Grazioli came on replacing Adam Birchall both players getting standing ovations for what was possibly Graz's last home game in a Barnet shirt. No further action took place as County seemed resigned to settle for the play offs and the Bees ran the clock down well as the referee signalled the end of the match.

It was a deserved three points for Barnet who defied the difference in league positions between the teams, Jason Puncheon was really on song today lots of trickery and dangerous crossing was too much for County to handle and the introduction of Danny Hart sealed the game and shows there could be a bright future for him and this young Barnet side.
