Fixture List, Previews and Reports

2008/09 Season

League Two

These were released on 16 June. Our opening game is home to Chesterfield. Our first away trip (discounting Brighton in the League Cup) is Rochdale. Boxing Day sees us pitched against new kids on the block and Conference Champions, Aldershot Town, at Underhill. (This is closely followed by an away trip to Bournemouth. I have been to Bournemouth at Christmas as my nan used to live there. Not a day for the seaside if memory serves. Although what with global warming?)

We don't have a New Years Day match this year as it's on a Thursday - and it seems the League want to get back to Saturdays ASAP - so on the Saturday we're at home to Grimsby. Our last away trip is to Macclesfield on 25 April and the last game of the season at home on 02 May to Port Vale.

Our first match against the Conference Play Off winners, Exeter City, is at home on 25 October. Official Football League Website

Pre Season Friendlies

It only seems like a few months ago that the last season started, and it's already over.

And there are already eight friendlies announced. Kicking off with what's becoming a traditional visit to St Albans City of the Conference South. They just escaped a second relegation in a row last season, finishing 19th (out of 22). Among their players is a certain Junior Harvey who is more famous for having played for AFC Wimbledon. Or being a member of rap group, So Solid Crew. Not sure if that's spelt with a silent C, or which one makes him more famous...

... moving swiftly on, and at risk of further offending our fellow clubs and/or players (but all in the best possible taste, as the late great Kenny Everett used to say), we have our usual mauling by the Woolwich Wanderers (ahem ;-).

During the week there are two consecutive evening matches. The first is on Tuesday against Harlow Town of the Isthmian Premier League. They finished 15th last season. The next day we are away to Northwood of the Isthmian League Division One North. They finished 10th last season.

This is is soon followed by Leeds United with a possible return to Underhill for Tresor Kandol. Amazingly Leeds are in the League One play offs as I write, despite starting last season with a 15 point penalty. Good luck to them as they appear to be returning to their 'natural level'.

Then, the one I'm most looking forward to, is the first friendly in my memory against Wingate & Finchley of the Isthmian League, Division One North. They finished 18th last season, one below our friends Potters Bar FC. W&F are actually nearer to where I live than Barnet FC so I can rightly be accused of being a glory hunter ... perhaps with the same success this season as glory hunting fans of a few other North London clubs I could mention.

Bringing up the rear we are visiting Harrow Borough (of the Isthmian League Premier Division, finishing 16th last season) on Wednesday 30 July. This game was agreed when we bought Albert Adomah from them. I'd gladly play them a few more times in return! (Especially if they've got any more like him :-)

Lastly, to date, we are pitted against old foes from the Herts Senior Cup, Watford. Last time Watford played at Underhill was in this competition. I walked into a broom cupboard that night, mistaking it for the exit in the bar... They're in the Championship play offs as I write so they could be a Premiership team by the time we play them. Good luck!

Note

Where cup games clash with league games (or other cup games) I think the following priorities are observed (with the lesser game being rearranged):

1. FA Cup
2. League Cup
3. League games
4. Johnstone's Paint Trophy
5. Herts Senior Cup

Reserve Fixtures

The club did not running a reserve team last season. There has been no announcement for the 2008/09 season (to the best of my knowledge).

Notes and Caveats

Scores below show Barnet's goals first - regardless of home or away. All dates and times should be double checked with the Official Site, barnetfc.com. Especially the times as these are sometimes the editor's own estimate.
